Killed in the line of duty on August 25, 1973

Officer Mills was shot and killed as he and another officer were leaving the scene of a disturbance call. A man came out of a nearby trailer and opened fire with a shotgun, striking Officer Mills. The suspect had nothing to do with the original disturbance call.

When Gary Mills died, he had served with the Boulder Police Department for one year. He was 26 years old.
